templates for Spool or Japanese X quilt block

This shape collection includes shapes for the old-fashioned Spool Block by Nancy Cabot (Beyer 186-2 and Brackman 1970). This old block has become popular recently as “Japanese X” because of a quilt exhibited in Japan by Setsuko Inagawa in 2011.

Japanese X quilt by Carol Skinner in Panama

I was inspired by this gorgeous variation of Spool or Japanese X by Carol Skinner of Panama, who gave me permission to use photos she took of her blocks here and in the shape collection.

Print on scraps for Spool quilt

Inklingo Combo Layout 1 prints all of the shapes at the same time! It is a great way to use scraps from your stash.

I sew these shapes by machine unless I need a portable project. With Inklingo lines printed on the fabric, you can sew some seams by hand and some by machine.

sew spool (Japanese X) by machine

The main Spool shape is the hexagon. This one is normally machine pieced.

Love the lines. Quilt more!

I am amazed at how many choices this block has in this collection. I bought this block because I want to use it as a friendship block. It reminds me of the one my grandmother used in one of her quilts.

  2. Bruce (verified owner)

I bought and downloaded the Spool or Japanese X block last night. As I was going through the pages I was thinking WOW. There are so many possibilities with all the layout options of these shapes. I was turning over ideas in my head about all the different blocks that can be made with just a few of the shapes. Thank you Linda for another awesome collection. It is well worth double the price you are charging.

  3. Cathi (verified owner)

There are a ton of possibilities with this collection. The shapes go together effortlessly and make it an absolute joy to stitch. The extra shapes tucked in some of the layouts add to the fun.
