GOOD NEWS
POTC is not just for quilters who like English Paper Piecing.
The brilliance of Lucy Boston was in the way she used the designs in the fabric, not her sewing method.
Lucy Boston (1892-1990) used English Paper Piecing, but you can choose your own method and get better results, faster. Inklingo makes it easy for you.
"Tried to do Patchwork of the Crosses the traditional way but as I have arthritis in my fingers I found sewing with the templates too hard. Looked on your website, purchased Inklingo and a new printer and am enjoying sewing by hand again. I just love the ease of use and have told all my friends to give it a try." - Carolyn in NSW Australia
It is much easier to print the shapes on fabric with Inklingo (TWO methods of fussy cutting) and sew with a running stitch. Quilters tell me they can start and finish 3 or 4 POTC blocks with Inklingo in the time it would take to make ONE with EPP.\
"I use Inklingo to print templates on card stock for English Paper Piecing. It allows me to save money over purchasing die cuts." - Dawn in Ontario, Canada
If EPP is the method you prefer, you can print your own templates with Inklingo. See all the advantages of Inklingo paper pieces compared to other paper templates at Paper Pieces to Print

Why quilters love Inklingo for POTC
ABOUT LUCY BOSTON
Lucy Boston was born in England in 1892, and lived to be 97 years old. She designed and made at least twenty amazing patchworks in her long life, but she is more famous as the author of the Green Knowe children's books, for her ancient manor house and garden near Cambridge in England, and for her long, creative old age.
Lucy Boston published her first books when she was in her sixties, and she continued to write, sew, and garden when she was in her nineties. She was an extraordinary person, and still inspires affection and admiration today.
Patchwork of the Crosses
My pattern book for The Patchwork of the Crosses (POTC) was prepared with the gracious assistance of Diana Boston (Lucy Boston's daughter-in-law), and is illustrated with photographs by Julia Hedgecoe.
Lucy Boston sewed all of her quilts with templates and the method known as English Paper Piecing. You can use Inklingo to print templates for EPP, but these designs are faster and easier with a running stitch by hand, or by machine. If you sew with a running stitch, it is more portable, easier to prepare (no templates, no basting), faster to sew, and the stitches don't show on the front.
If you prefer English Paper Piecing, you can print the Inklingo templates without seam alowances and cut several layers of paper at a time with a rotary cutter. (In addition to the shapes to print on fabric, every Inklingo shape collection includes the shapes without seam allowances for templates.)
Fern in Singapore made a gorgeous replica of Lucy Boston's quilt. You can see many of her blocks on the All About Inklingo blog.
POTC is a wonderful quilt to make. I enjoyed piecing it so much. Many of my blocks were completely machine pieced. Just pin carefully, keep your machine stitches small and sew cross-hair to cross-hair. Inklingo makes this so easy. I finished my POTC quilt in record time by machine piecing many of my blocks. Some of my blocks were hand-pieced when I had to travel for work. Inklingo is also fabulous for hand-piecing. The lines are so accurate and clear. Much more accurate and faster than drawing with a template, and much faster to sew than EPP.
